Think that working with a factory is the best solution
Many importers prefer buying directly from factories, believing they offer better prices than trading companies. While this isn’t necessarily wrong, limiting yourself to factories isn’t always the best approach.
Especially for buyers with limited experience, it’s hard to tell whether suppliers are real factories since they all claim to be. In reality, most are trading companies.
If you’re not focusing on a single product type with a large order, there’s no need to insist on finding a “real” factory—trading companies are a suitable option. Remember to compare their products, prices, communication, attitude, and service quality.
Not source your product from the right place in China
There are many industrial clusters in China, such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhongshan in Guangdong Province, Yiwu, Ningbo in Zhejiang Province, Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, and Quanzhou in Fujian Province.
I once met someone in Yiwu who wanted to import a crystal chandelier to the USA. He complained that it was hard to find one in Yiwu’s wholesale market. I told him that the lighting industry cluster is in Zhongshan, so it’s definitely hard to find a good deal on chandeliers in Yiwu.
Overlook molding costs when developing new products
Before developing a new product, it’s important to evaluate the overall costs for your project, especially the molding costs.
Take custom-designed plastic toys for example. If a new mold is needed for toy production, it could easily cost $10,000 or more. The more complex the design, the higher the cost.
Consult your supplier for product certificate/patent details
Many importers think suppliers know everything. But actually, many suppliers don’t know much about product certifications and patents. Additionally, some dishonest suppliers may even offer fake certificates or provide invalid ones.
Here are 2 ways to get the correct information:
- Consult with your local customs broker about the product requirements.
- Check with relevant institutions in your country for certifications needed to sell the product.
About patents, don’t just take the supplier’s word for it. You must verify it on your country’s patent office website, such as the American USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). Otherwise, you could get into trouble selling a product with an infringed patent. Here’s a real case study from our client—Amazon product infringement.
