China’s Faith Factory for All Religions

The little angel you bought in the Vatican might actually come from a small Chinese town called Yiwu. At Yiwu wholesale market, faiths from around the world come remarkably close to each other in the same aisle. Angels, crosses, and Virgin Mary statues sit just steps away from Tibetan Buddhist malas, prayer wheels, and temple incense.

While sourcing religious products for our clients, we often see monks and Muslim traders picking their stock in person. Let’s take a look at some of these products.

You might know that China produces more Bibles than anywhere else in the world. But at Yiwu’s market, you can also find all kinds of Christian products: polyresin statues, plaster figures, crosses, rosaries, notebooks, and holy water bottles in different materials and styles — plastic, glass, or embossed designs.

There are also religious figurines, the Holy Family, the Three Wise Men, Jesus, Virgin Mary, candlesticks, wall hangings, jewelry, framed art, and ceramics. Almost all of these are made for export.

There are also stalls dedicated to wholesale Islamic products. The selection here is impressive. You can find smart Quran speakers and cylindrical projection lamps shaped like the moon, mosques, or the Kaaba. Some speakers let you play full Quran recitations, translations, and Hadiths via remote or app. A few even include a Bakhoor incense spray feature.

You can also find smart prayer mats, digital Azan clocks, and projector Quran speakers that show stars or Islamic patterns while playing Quranic verses.

Clothing and festival items are also well stocked. You can find headscarves, tablecloths, holiday decorations, and even shops that specialize in buttons and fasteners for long robes.

In District 1, we often see monks coming to the market to pick up their stock, carefully comparing styles, materials, and the purpose of each ritual item. The selection is very focused: Buddha statues (like Guanyin and other Buddha figures), Buddhist ritual instruments and offerings (singing bowls, alms bowls, offering trays, etc.), malas and prayer beads, cultural souvenirs and hanging ornaments, and temple incense. Many of these items are used in temples and are also best-sellers in D2C niche e-commerce stores.

Especially some Tibetan Buddhist-style items are also easy to find, like hanging ornaments, knots, prayer wheels, and Thangka decorations. These products are especially popular in the Southeast Asian market and with Tibetan vendors. Some stalls even have dozens of Guanyin and Buddha statues, with ritual instruments neatly arranged.

There are also all kinds of incense products. Besides the traditional stick incense used in temples, the wholesale market has individually packaged incense tablets (with fireproof pads), short sticks, and long sticks. These are perfect for retail shops, gift stores, and online sales.

You can also find Turkish spiritual “evil eye” charms in many forms, like fridge magnets, hanging ornaments, tabletop decorations, and jewelry.
